Airline plans expansion in Girona |
People staying in Costa Brava villas will soon be able to access more flights in and out of the region following a substantial airline expansion.
Ryanair announced that it plans to base five new aircraft at Girona airport, which will increase its number of routes from the hub to 75 and boost passenger numbers to eight million a year by 2012.
According to the airline, these passengers will save some 800m (£631,190) compared to those that fly into the busier El Prat airport in Barcelona.
The expansion could also deliver a substantial benefit to the Catalan region, with a visitor spend of some 1.2 billion a year.
Michael Cawley, deputy chief executive of Ryanair, said: "Ryanair started flying from Barcelona Girona, our first Spanish airport, in 2002 and the partnership has been a phenomenal success
providing the region with millions of visitors from all over Europe. "This expansion will see Ryanair's investment at the airport rise to 14 aircraft worth $1 billion."
The low-cost airline flies to the Costa Brava region from Stansted and Luton airports in London, as well as Bournemouth, Nottingham East Midlands, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and others.
