Florence library opens doors to visitors |
Cultural travellers staying in Tuscany villas over the coming months will be able to visit one of Florence's biggest libraries as it hosts a new exhibition.
The Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana will hold a display with a title that translates as The Shape of Books: From the Scroll to the Codex until July 31st this year.
Visitors will be able to learn about the variety of materials used for writing on in both eastern and western civilisations throughout history, from the third century BC up to the 19th century AD.
The items on display will be divided into two sections, one relating to the ancient world and the other dealing with more recent periods.
Exhibits in the former category include pieces such as shards of pottery, fragments of papyrus scrolls and tablets of waxed wood and lead.
The more 'recent' section features items such as codices and scrolls that describe the work of monks who copied manuscripts into the monasteries in the Middle Ages and also explores the workshops of the Renaissance.
Among the highlights of this part of the exhibition is a giant 13th century Bible from the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and a small Bible linked to Marco Polo's travels to China.
