Florence to celebrate its many geniuses |
Holidaymakers currently spending time in Tuscany villas will be able to visit the famous province of Florence as it celebrates its association with some of history's most celebrated geniuses.
Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante Alighieri, Niccolo Macchiavelli, Antonio Meucci and many other artists, thinkers, writers and inventors all trace their roots back to Florence.
To celebrate this fact, every year the city hosts the Florentine Genius, or Genio Fiorentino in the local language.
The festival opened today (May 15th) and will run until May 25th, incorporating exhibitions, performances, conferences, guided tours, fashion shows and other activities.
This year's celebration will be particularly significant as it will commemorate exactly 200 years since the birth of Meucci, the man who many people believe should have been credited with the invention of the telephone.
Florentine Genius will include events taking place in the city of Florence and the 43 communes of the province, under the motto "Ideas do not frighten the people that have them", a quote from the writer Vasco Pratolini.
