Florence visitors given glimpse of Iris Garden |
People staying in Tuscany villas during the month of May could be among a lucky few who get the chance to see the Iris Garden in Florence's Piazzale Michelangelo.
The picturesque garden has an enviable hillside location offering excellent views of Florence but is only open for a few weeks every year.
This year, visitors and residents of Florence have been able to explore the garden since April 27th and will be able to continue until its gates close on May 20th.
Irises bloom in abundance in the garden, many of which have been entered into the Premio Firenze competition, which has been held in Florence every year since 1954.
On first glance, the Tuscan city may not appear to offer many parks or open spaces, but there are some sites where visitors can take in some floral sights, including the Boboli Gardens.
These gardens have a complex artistic and botanical history, while the orderly and symmetrical Bardini Gardens offer impressive views of the city.
Both of these sites, as well as the garden of Villa Il Ventaglio, are aesthetically interesting as they roughly follow the contours of the Florentine hills.
