Leaning tower of Pisa 'safe for centuries to come' |
Holidaymakers planning stays in Tuscany villas in the future will be happy to hear that one of the region's most famous attractions, the leaning tower of Pisa, will be stable for another 300 years.
A team of Italian engineers carried out a project to study and stabilise the tower, which currently leans about four metres off centre.
Michele Jamiolkowski, leader of the project, told the Corriere della Serra newspaper that the team's expectations "have been confirmed".
"Now we can say that the tower can rest easy for at least 300 years," the engineer and geologist added.
Work has been taking place for more than a decade to stabilise the famous monument and the tower has now stopped leaning for the first time in 800 years.
Holidaymakers staying in Tuscany villas will find the tower in Pisa's Piazza del Duomo, or Cathedral Square, where it stands alongside the Duomo, the Baptistery and the Camposanto.
