Mallorcan town celebrates San Agustin |
People enjoying Mallorca villa holidays this month may notice the emergence of a party atmosphere in the town of Felanitx.
The town will celebrate its patron saint in a festival running from August 22nd to 30th.
This period of revelry will include concerts, street band performances and sporting events, which will officially kick off on the first day of the festival with an opening proclamation.
One of the highlights of the Fiestas de San Agustin is Els Cavallets, a series of ritual dances that dates back to the founding of the convent of San Agustin in 1603.
This tradition sees six children between the ages of ten and 13 dancing around a woman wearing a costume designed to resemble a pony.
The dances, which are performed twice during the festival, are presented with accompaniment by bagpipes, flutes and drums.
Brits enjoying Mallorca villa holidays will be able to find the community of Felanitx in the south-east of the island, with the main town located about 48km from the island's capital of Palma.
